Who may take PredniSONE?
Prednisone is not for everyone
Although there can be problems in deciding whether some drugs are suitable for the treatment of particular individuals, there are more factors to consider when deciding whether to take Prednisone. It’s always safer to discuss your current medical needs with a doctor and balance the benefits and costs of Prednisone as a possible treatment.
Are you well?
This looks to be a strange question but, because Prednisone suppresses your autoimmune system, it’s particularly important that you do not have a current illness or infection. In particular, do not start Prednisone if you know you have any kind of fungal infection. There are diseases that can be affected by a steroid.
Do you have any of the following problems?
Any thyroid disease affects the way in which your adrenal gland works. Liver or kidney disease affects the speed at which your body removes the Prednisone from your bloodstream. In both cases, your dosage will need adjusting. There are also difficulties if you have diabetes, osteoporosis or any disease such as tuberculosis and malaria which affect your body over time. High blood pressure and a diagnosis of heart disease require difficult decisions. Finally, you should take advice if you have a history of depression.
Are you pregnant?
Although there’s no direct evidence of damage to unborn babies, it’s always wise to get confirmation of the latest medical information if you find yourself pregnant.
Are you proposing to give Prednisone to a child?
There’s clear evidence that Prednisone can affect the speed at which children grow. So, as a general rule, you should not give this drug to a young child unless a doctor can monitor the child’s physical development over the relevant period of time. When teens are more or less fully grown, there’s less risk.
Avoid people who are ill
As your immune system weakens, you are more likely to catch illnesses and diseases from others. Sometimes childhood illnesses like measles and chicken pox are more serious, even in a healthy adult. If you are taking Prednisone, some of these diseases can be fatal.
Do not have a vaccination
Even though you may be well, you should never have a vaccination including a live vaccine. No matter why the vaccination may appear necessary, it’s not worth the risk to your health, e.g. if you are proposing to visit a country where a vaccination is required, cancel the visit.
How is your stress level?
Because Prednisone affects the adrenal gland, stress can have a more serious effect on your body. If you begin to suffer a more serious physical illness, have an accident, require surgery, or have a severe emotional upset, tell your doctor who will advise on a change to your dosage.
